When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. This is Carlos. Diehz’s first major film appearance. He was an architect until 2020, and when his last child left home, he decided to take online acting classes and audition. The Roman Catholic Church has had three African popes: Victor I (189-199 AD), Miltiades (also known as Melchias, 311-314 AD), and Gelasius I (492-496 AD). Since all three of those popes who were born in Africa were of European ethnic origin, he is likely to be the one who is ethnically African. If there were only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery. So faith is not necessary. Let us pray that God would give us a Pope who doubts. And may He give us a Pope who sins and asks for forgiveness. The acting, intrigue, dialogue and cinematography are outstanding throughout, but the warning signs are there early in the film. When the potential candidates talk about being a neoliberal progressive church, you wonder where else they can go with it, and boy do they go with it. I let the strange tone shift go, but I won’t spoil the ending, which comes out of another movie and leads to a confrontation with everything they film during the movie. The world shifts like a rollercoaster as it happens and then but in the final scenes.
